It's That Time of Year Again -- Pothole Season!

Tips to avoid potholes -- Mike Naughton Ford Near Denver Colorado

Potholes are an unfortunate addition to most roads throughout our country especially after the cold and wet winter conditions. Whether on your daily commute, drive around town, or summer road trip, avoiding these potholes is an important skill.

Potholes are caused most commonly by weather, especially rain, snow and fluctuating temperatures. The combination of the weather changes and constant traffic causes the weak asphalt to form holes in the road. Sometimes these potholes can be deeper than they appear – especially when there is standing water.

Here are some tips to avoid potholes:

* Scan the road! Potholes are usually visible far in advance.  So keep a look out!

* Avoid puddles if you can. Puddles were fun to jump in as children but not so much as an adult driving down the road. If you see a puddle in the road, avoid it if possible because you never know just how deep it is!

* If you did your best to avoid the potholes but still hit a major one, make sure to check your car for damage as soon as it is safe to do so.

* Always be prepared with a spare tire, a jack, and tools just in case a pothole causes a damaged tire!

* Make sure your tires are always properly inflated, as poorly maintained tires are more likely to sustain damage from a pothole.
