Avoid Collisions With These Tips and Ford's Driver Assistance Tools

Ford Co-Pilot 360 (TM)

Vehicle collisions are an unfortunate aspect of driving.  There are so many distractions, unforeseen events, and automobiles on the road, that some accidents are bound to happen.  There are some simple tips and innovative tools you can use to reduce your chance of being in a collision.

Many collisions involve two of more vehicles, such as rear-end collisions, head-on collisions, and intersection collisions.  Being attentive to your surroundings and the other vehicles is essential to reduce all collisions.  In particular, vigilantly scan the road in front of you to watch for potential issues such as a vehicle that has veered into your lane.  If you see a vehicle coming at you, slow down and be ready to move to the side of the road if possible.

Preventing a rear-end collision can be a challenge since you are depending on another driver to be paying attention.  Some ways you can help is to signal your intentions and slow down gradually.  If possible, leave some room in front of the vehicle when you are stopped.  If you happen to be hit from behind, this allows a cushion for you to not hit the vehicle in front of you. Maintain a sufficient stopping distance from the vehicle in front of you to avoid colliding if they stop suddenly.

Avoiding a side collision at an intersection includes proceeding through any intersection with caution even if you have the right-of-way.  If you come to a four way stop first but another vehicle is pushy about going before you, let them go first.  Spending a few extra seconds at a stop is better than spending time getting a vehicle repaired.

One of the best tips for safer driving is to drive a Ford vehicle equipped with an exciting variety of innovative driver-assistance features.  The Ford Co-Pilot360 rolled out on the 2019 Ford Edge and will be available on about 90% of the North American Ford line-up by 2020.  It is geared toward giving drivers confidence to handle the congestion and distractions that create a challenge.  This system includes blind spot information system, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear backup camera, lane keeping system, and auto high beam lighting.  While these systems are no substitute for careful and attentive driving, they are an excellent way to enhance a driver's natural abilities.
